Surgery, pain and cancer treatment – finding calm while your body does something huge

Facing an operation, ongoing pain or a cancer diagnosis is hard enough. Doing it in a language that isn't your own – with consultations, forms and test results in German or French – can make it feel even more overwhelming. I support you in English, alongside your medical care, so you can go through what lies ahead with more calm and trust.

Who this is for

For adults who are preparing for a medical procedure, living with pain, or going through cancer treatment – before, during or after.

  • You have an operation coming up and feel anxious about it
  • You live with chronic or recurring pain
  • You have recently received a cancer diagnosis and can't find any calm
  • You are about to start chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Brachytherapy (internal radiotherapy) feels particularly frightening
  • You are struggling with nausea, exhaustion or poor sleep
  • You are waiting for results or follow-up scans and the worry won't let go

I have particular experience supporting women with gynaecological cancers and breast cancer, and with the chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery that come with them.

What hypnotherapy can do – and what it can't

Hypnotherapy does not cure illness. What it can do is change how you experience what is happening. Research shows that hypnosis can reduce anxiety around medical procedures and help with symptoms such as nausea, pain and fatigue – alongside medical treatment.

  • Montgomery GH et al. (2007): A randomized clinical trial of a brief hypnosis intervention to control side effects in breast surgery patients. J Natl Cancer Inst. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17728216
  • Richardson J et al. (2007): Hypnosis for nausea and vomiting in cancer chemotherapy: a systematic review of the research evidence. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17760926

Hypnotherapy can support you with

  • fear before surgery, treatments and scans
  • pain and tension
  • inner restlessness and racing thoughts
  • nausea and exhaustion (fatigue)
  • sleep problems
  • feeling at the mercy of what is happening
  • rebuilding trust in your body

Hypnotherapy is not

  • a replacement for surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • a promise of healing
  • a substitute for psycho-oncological support
  • a reason to question your doctors' recommendations

How I can support you

Before surgery

Go into your operation feeling prepared rather than afraid. We create a calm inner place and prepare your body mindfully for what is coming – and, afterwards, support you as you recover.

Living with pain

Pain is real, and so is the way stress amplifies it. Together we work on letting tension go, finding relief you can access yourself, and feeling less at the mercy of your pain.

During cancer treatment

From diagnosis through chemotherapy and radiotherapy to life after treatment. You learn an inner anchor you can use anywhere – during an infusion, lying still on the radiotherapy table, or in the waiting room before a scan.

When brachytherapy feels especially hard

Many women find internal radiotherapy much harder than external treatment. It is intimate, you have to lie still for a long time, and the feeling of being at the mercy of it all can be overwhelming. This is where I work with particular care. You set the pace. We use images of protection and dignity, and a pleasant inner distance – so that one part of you can stay calm and cooperate, while another part is allowed to rest in your safe place.

Cellular hypnosis – working with your body, not against it

In cellular hypnosis, you turn your attention all the way inwards – down to the level where your body does its smallest, most detailed work. We begin where you feel good: in your “comfort cells”. Many people experience this place as a colour, a light, warmth or movement. It becomes your inner reference point – this is what calm feels like in your body.

From there, we travel gently to the place that needs attention right now – for example before an operation, or during chemotherapy or radiotherapy. You notice what is there and give your body what it needs from you in that moment: calm, trust, appreciation. The treatment itself can take on a new image, too: chemotherapy as a specialist that works with precision; radiotherapy as calm, millimetre-precise light.

Many clients then no longer experience their treatment as something being done to them, but as something they go through together with their body.

Cellular hypnosis is a supportive method. It does not replace medical treatment and makes no promise of healing.

How it works

20 minutes, by phone or Zoom. We talk about where you are right now and whether hypnotherapy is a good fit.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can hypnotherapy cure cancer?

No. Hypnotherapy is not a cancer treatment and does not replace any medical therapy. It can, however, help you cope better with anxiety, stress and the strain of treatment.

Can I have hypnotherapy during chemotherapy or radiotherapy?

Yes, hypnotherapy works well alongside medical treatment. Feel free to let your care team know. If you are unsure, we can talk it through in the free intro call.

When is the best time to start?

Ideally before a new phase of treatment begins – before surgery, the first chemotherapy or radiotherapy. But hypnotherapy can also help in the middle of treatment or afterwards.

What is cellular hypnosis?

In cellular hypnosis, you direct your attention to the level of your cells. Starting from a place where you feel good, I guide you to the area that needs attention right now. Many people experience more calm and a stronger connection with their body. It is a supportive method, not a promise of healing.

Do you offer sessions in English online?

Yes. Sessions in English are available both in person in Gampel and online via Zoom.

Is hypnotherapy covered by health insurance?

No. Hypnotherapy is not covered by basic or supplementary health insurance.

Does hypnotherapy replace psycho-oncological support?

No. It can complement psycho-oncological support but not replace it. If you notice that things are weighing on you heavily, please also speak to your care team.

Important: Hypnotherapy is a complementary method. It does not replace medical, oncological or psycho-oncological treatment and makes no promise of healing. Please do not stop any treatment or change any medication without consulting your care team.

You don't have to go through this alone.

In a free 20-minute call, we'll talk about where you are right now and how I can support you – in English.
